Mohs micrographic surgery

Whether or not you may need Mohs or an excision is determined by Dr. Glass and is based on several contributing factors such as location, size, and type of cancer.

ELECTRODESICCATION AND CURETTAGE (ED&C)

ED&C is a method for treating certain types of skin cancer (including basal cell carcinoma and superficial squamous cell carcinoma) through a series of scraping and cauterizing techniques.

STANDARD EXCISION REMOVAL

A standard excision is how most skin cancers are treated.
This involves numbing the area, excising the skin cancer with appropriate margins of normal tissue, then closing the wound immediately with sutures. The tissue that is removed is then sent off to a dermatopathologist to be analyzed to ensure clear margins were achieved, Clear margins mean that all of the cancer cells that border the cancer were also removed. This is a quick procedure that is done in our office. Excisions generally take 30 minutes to 1 hour.

MOHS MICROGRAPHIC SURGERY

The procedure is done in stages, all in one visit, while the patient waits between each stage. After removing a layer of tissue, Dr. Glass examines it under a microscope in an on-site lab. If any cancer cells remain, the surgeon knows the exact area where they are and removes another layer of tissue from that precise location, while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. The doctor repeats this process until no cancer cells remain.
